Canva AI Image Generation: Magic Media Prompts That Work

Short answer

To generate an AI image in Canva, open a design, go to Apps or the Elements panel, choose Magic Media, type a prompt describing subject, setting and light, pick a style and aspect ratio, and generate. The results drop straight onto your canvas as editable elements. Monthly generation limits depend on whether you are on Canva Free or Canva Pro.

Canva’s AI image generator lives inside the design editor as Magic Media, part of what Canva calls Magic Studio. That placement is the point: you generate an image in the context of the poster, slide or post it is going into, and it lands as an element you can crop, layer and recolour like anything else. This guide covers where to find Magic Media, how to write prompts that work for a layout rather than a gallery, and how to get usable results within the limits of a Free or Pro account.

Where Magic Media sits in Canva

Open any design, then look for Magic Media in the Apps panel on the left (it may also appear under Elements, and the exact placement changes with updates). Inside you will find tabs for images and for video; this guide focuses on images. You type a prompt, choose a style and an aspect ratio, and Canva returns a small set of options. Click one and it is placed on the current page.

Because the image arrives as a normal element, everything else in Canva applies: drag the corners to resize, use the crop tool, add a frame, lower the transparency, or run Background Remover on it. That changes how you prompt. You do not need the model to produce a finished composition with text space built in; you need a strong subject that you can position yourself.

Prompts for a layout have a different goal from prompts for a standalone artwork. Aim for an image that is easy to place:

  1. Name the subject plainly. "A stack of three ceramic bowls" rather than "beautiful kitchenware".
  2. Ask for a simple background. "On a plain pale grey background" or "against a soft gradient" gives you room for text and keeps the image from fighting the rest of the page.
  3. Describe light. "Soft daylight from the left" produces a consistent look across several generated elements.
  4. State the finish. "Photographic", "flat illustration", "3D render" or "watercolour". Canva also offers style presets; pick one or describe the finish, not both, to avoid conflicts.
  5. Keep people generic. Describe a role and a setting ("a florist arranging stems in a bright shop"), never a real person.

Two sentences is usually enough. Long prompts packed with adjectives tend to give busy images that are hard to lay out. If the first set is close but not right, change one thing and regenerate rather than rewriting from scratch.

Choosing style and aspect ratio

Magic Media offers a set of style presets (the names change from time to time) and a choice of aspect ratios, typically square, landscape and portrait. Pick the ratio that matches where the image will sit: portrait for a story or a column, landscape for a header. Generating square and stretching later softens the image; cropping is fine, stretching is not.

For a series of social posts, choose one style preset and one lighting phrase and reuse them across every prompt. Consistency in a Canva grid comes from the repeated style, not from the subject.

After generation: making it fit

  • Crop to the subject. Double-click the image to crop inside the frame without losing the original.
  • Remove the background when you want the subject on your own colour. Background Remover works best on images generated with a plain backdrop.
  • Match colours. Pull a colour from the image into your text or shapes with the colour picker so the page reads as one piece.
  • Fix details with Magic Edit rather than regenerating everything. The Magic Studio edits guide covers Magic Edit, Magic Expand, Magic Grab and Magic Eraser.
  • Keep the prompt. Paste it into the design’s notes or a hidden text box so you can regenerate a matching image next month.

Try it

A single potted olive tree in a terracotta pot on a plain warm beige background. Soft daylight from the left, gentle shadow to the right. Photographic, clean and minimal, lots of empty space around the subject.
Style: none (described in prompt). Aspect ratio: portrait.

Place the result on the left half of a poster and set your headline on the right. Then regenerate with "a stack of linen napkins" in place of the olive tree, keeping every other word, and you have a matching second image for the series.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the AI image generator in Canva?
Open a design and look for Magic Media in the Apps panel on the left side of the editor; it can also appear under Elements. Choose the images tab, type a prompt, pick a style and aspect ratio, and the result is placed directly on your page as an editable element.
Is Canva AI image generation free?
Canva Free includes a limited number of Magic Media generations, and Canva Pro and team plans include more. The exact monthly allowances change, so check Canva’s current plan comparison page. Generated images can be used within your designs under Canva’s terms.
How do I make Canva AI images match across a series of posts?
Reuse the same style preset, the same lighting phrase and the same background description in every prompt, changing only the subject. Keep the prompt saved in the design so you can regenerate later. Matching colours with the colour picker ties the set together further.
