The five most-asked questions
Which image model does Gemini use?
Gemini generates with Google's Imagen models and edits with a native Gemini image model (nicknamed Nano Banana in 2025) that keeps subjects consistent across edits. The model names in the interface change with releases.
Can Gemini edit my own photos?
Yes. Upload a photo and describe the change, such as a new background or outfit, and it regenerates the image while keeping the subject. Check faces and text after each edit.
Are Gemini images watermarked?
Yes, generated and edited images carry an invisible SynthID watermark that Google's tools can detect. It does not change how the image looks.
Which sizes and ratios are available?
You can ask for square, portrait or landscape; exact pixel sizes depend on the model and plan. Check Google's help pages for the current limits.
Can I use Gemini images commercially?
Google's terms for your plan govern that; many business uses are allowed, but read the current generative AI terms and keep a record of the prompt and date for each image you deliver.
