How to Save ChatGPT Images With Their Prompts
ChatGPT saves every image you create in its Images library, but the prompt stays in the conversation that made it, and deleting that chat removes the image too. To keep image and prompt together, either copy the prompt beside each download in your own notes, or use a tool such as Dreamdrive, a free Chrome extension that saves each ChatGPT image automatically with its prompt.
ChatGPT is now one of the most used image generators, and also one of the easiest places to lose work. The images are easy to find; the prompts that made them are not. This guide explains where ChatGPT keeps your images, what is and isn't kept with them, and three ways to keep every image with its prompt.
Where ChatGPT keeps your images
Every image you create is saved automatically to Images (sometimes shown as My images) in the sidebar, on the web and in the mobile app. From there you can copy, save or share an image. Images is separate from Library, ChatGPT's general file store.
Two things catch people out:
- The prompt lives in the chat, not with the image. The Images view is a gallery. To see what you asked for, you have to find the conversation the image came from.
- Deleting a chat deletes its images. OpenAI's help centre says the way to remove an image from Images is to delete the chat it was made in, and deleted chats are permanently removed within 30 days. Tidy up your chat list and you can lose the pictures with it.
What a downloaded ChatGPT image contains
OpenAI adds C2PA content credentials and an invisible SynthID watermark to images from ChatGPT, which identify the image as AI-made. That is provenance, not a record of your prompt: do not rely on the file to tell you later what you asked for. Metadata is also easily stripped, for example by screenshots or when an image is posted to social media.
Three ways to keep image and prompt together
1. A manual log
Download the image, then paste the prompt into a document or spreadsheet with the file name, the date and the chat title. It works, costs nothing and takes discipline: the first busy day, the log falls behind.
2. Keep the chat as the record
Rename each chat after the project and never delete it. Shared links can also include images, and a shared link is a snapshot of the conversation when you made it. This keeps the prompt next to the image, but only inside ChatGPT, and finding one image among hundreds of chats is slow.
3. Save automatically as you go
Dreamdrive is a free Chrome extension that saves each ChatGPT image the moment it appears, at full size, together with the prompt. Everything goes into one searchable library alongside your images and videos from other AI tools, so you can search a word from the prompt months later, file the image under a client project, and copy the prompt straight back into ChatGPT or another tool. Deleting the chat no longer deletes your record.
Bring in what you already made
For older work, ChatGPT's data export (Settings, then Data controls, then Export) sends a download link by email that expires after 24 hours. Download it promptly. Dreamdrive can import a platform's own data export and read the prompts stored with it.
Try it
Make one image with this prompt, then check where its prompt is kept in your current setup.

If the answer is "only in the chat", decide now which of the three methods you will use, before the next project makes it urgent. Related: how to keep one prompt library across AI tools.
