Freepik Is Now Magnific: What Changed for Creatives
On 28 April 2026 Freepik, the Spanish company behind the stock library and AI suite, relaunched under the name Magnific, the upscaler it had acquired in 2024. Magnific now names the whole platform: stock assets, image and video generation, upscaling and collaboration tools. The upscaler technology is the same, and older magnific.ai addresses now lead to magnific.com.
For years two names covered two products. Freepik was where you found stock vectors, photos and icons, and later an AI image and video suite. Magnific was the upscaler that added detail as it enlarged, the one designers reached for when a render or an AI image needed to go to print. In April 2026 the company merged the two into a single brand. If you used either product, the change affects where you log in, what the tools are called and how you search for help. This guide sets out what is confirmed, what stayed the same and what to check yourself.
What happened
Freepik was founded in Málaga in 2010 as a search engine for design resources and grew into one of the large stock libraries. In May 2024 it acquired Magnific, a Spanish AI image-upscaling start-up. On 28 April 2026 the company relaunched as Magnific. Coverage of the announcement, including in tech.eu, quotes chief executive Joaquín Cuenca explaining the reason: people "saw fragments: Freepik as stock, Magnific as an upscaler."
The relaunch brings the stock library, the generative tools and the upscaling service under one brand. The company described the result as a single production environment for image generation, video, upscaling, audio and collaboration, with a library of more than 250 million assets.
Timeline
- 2010. Freepik is founded in Málaga as a search engine for free design resources, then builds its own stock library.
- May 2024. Freepik acquires Magnific, the upscaler known for adding detail as it enlarges.
- January 2026. A Business plan for teams launches, according to the relaunch coverage.
- 28 April 2026. The company relaunches as Magnific, and the upscaler's name becomes the name of the whole platform.
The practical consequence is simple: when someone says "Magnific" today they may mean the upscaler or the entire suite. In briefs and invoices, name the tool you actually used, for example "upscaled with Magnific Precision at 4x".
What the Magnific name covers now
| Setting | What it does | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Upscaler, Creative mode | Enlarges and invents detail, guided by a prompt and sliders | AI images, renders, illustration |
| Upscaler, Precision mode | Enlarges faithfully without adding new elements | Photos, products, logos, UI |
| Relight and Style Transfer | New lighting, or the look of a reference image | Retouching finished images |
| Image and video generation | The company's own and third-party models in one place | Concepts and short clips |
| Stock library | Vectors, photos, icons, templates and video | Licensed assets for layouts |
The developer documentation, now at docs.magnific.com, shows the scope clearly. The Magnific API lists image generation, video generation, image editing and stock content, with video models from several providers (including Kling, Hailuo, Wan, Runway, Seedance and LTX at the time of writing), plus the two upscalers, Relight and Style Transfer.
What stayed the same
- The upscaler. Magnific's API documentation states that it uses the same technology as Magnific.ai, with its future updates. Our guide to upscaler settings still applies: creativity, HDR, resemblance and fractality behave as before.
- Your downloaded files. Images you already downloaded are untouched on your own drive. Keep originals and a record of the settings and licence that applied, rather than relying on a platform history.
- The workflow. Finish an image elsewhere, upscale once at the end, record the settings. A new name does not change good practice.
What to check in your own account
Some details were not spelled out in the public announcement, so confirm them for your situation rather than assuming:
- Where you sign in. magnific.ai now redirects to magnific.com. If you used freepik.com, check where your account and history live today, and update bookmarks.
- Your plan and credits. Read the current pricing page and your billing page. Plan names and credit rules can change in a rebrand, and we do not quote prices.
- Licences for stock and AI output. Re-read the licence terms for commercial use, especially for client work and for assets you downloaded under the old name.
- Integrations and API keys. If you used the Freepik API, check the Magnific API documentation for current endpoints and authentication.
- Help articles and links. Old help links and tutorials may use either name. When a guide disagrees with what you see, trust the current interface.
Precision or Creative: the choice you will make most
The single most useful thing to understand about the upscaler is its two modes. Magnific's documentation describes Creative as adding or inferring new detail guided by your prompt, ideal for concept art, marketing creatives and ideation. Precision is high-fidelity super-resolution "without hallucinations", recommended for logos, UI, text and product photos. If an image has been approved by a client, start with Precision. If it is an AI image or a render that needs more texture, Creative is the tool. The full comparison is in Precision vs Creative.
Searching for help after the rename
Tutorials published before April 2026 say "Freepik AI", "Freepik Pikaso", "Freepik image generator" or "Magnific.ai". Searching with both names finds more answers. Our older guides to the image generator and AI video were written under the Freepik name; the controls they describe may have moved or been renamed in the current interface.
Try it
weathered terracotta roof tiles in afternoon sun, moss in the gaps, fine surface cracks, realistic texture
Use this as the prompt in Creative mode on a soft, low-resolution render or AI image of a roof, at 2x with creativity near its default. Then run the same image in Precision mode with no prompt and compare the tiles at 100%: Creative invents cracks and moss, Precision only sharpens what was already there.
