How to Back Up Your Midjourney Images and Prompts

Short answer

To back up Midjourney, select the images on the Create or Organize page (a whole day with the + beside the date, or a folder from its menu) and download them, then keep the prompts with the files. Your images stay on midjourney.com even if your subscription ends, but they can't be deleted, only moved to Trash, and there is no official export of prompts. Dreamdrive, a free Chrome extension, saves each new image with its prompt automatically and can import a bulk download.

Your Midjourney archive is probably the largest body of work you have made with AI, and most people have never backed it up. Midjourney is reliable, and your images remain on midjourney.com even after you cancel. But a backup is about more than the service staying online: it is about having your files and prompts somewhere you control, for clients, portfolios and the day you want to reuse them.

Step 1: download the images

  • Single image: the download icon on the Create or Organize page, or in the More Options menu.
  • Many images: select several with click-drag or shift-click, or select a whole day with the + beside the date, then download.
  • A folder: right-click the folder, or open its menu, and choose Download.

Work through your archive a month or a folder at a time; very large selections are slower and harder to check.

Step 2: keep the prompts

This is the part most backups miss. Midjourney has no official export of your job list with prompts. For individual images, More Options lets you copy the prompt, the Job ID and the seed. Some tools read prompt details from the downloaded files, but Midjourney does not document what it writes into them, so do not make the file your only record.

Practical options:

  1. Folders named by project plus a text file per folder with the key prompts.
  2. A spreadsheet with Job ID, prompt, parameters and file name. Thorough, slow.
  3. An automatic library. Dreamdrive imports a Midjourney bulk download and reads the prompts stored in the files where present, and from then on saves each new Midjourney image automatically with its prompt and settings as you make it.

Step 3: store it twice

Keep one copy on your computer or an external drive and one in cloud storage. Check one or two files from each batch actually open before deleting anything locally.

Good to know

  • Cancelling keeps your images. Midjourney says your images remain in your account and visible on midjourney.com without a subscription.
  • You cannot delete images, only move them to Trash (formerly Hide), so the archive only grows.
  • Search is good, but only inside Midjourney. The Organize page searches your prompts and attributes. Saved Searches replaced Smart Folders. A backup gives you that history outside Midjourney too.
