Short answer

For architecture and interiors in Midjourney, describe the building or room, its materials, the time of day and the camera position and lens, then add parameters such as --ar 3:2 --raw. Treat the results as concept imagery for mood and direction, not as plans or construction drawings.

How to structure an architecture or interior prompt

Architectural images depend on four decisions a photographer would make on site: what the building or room is, what it is made of, when you are seeing it and where the camera stands. Put those into your prompt in that order and add parameters at the end.

  1. Building type and form: "a two-storey timber house with a low pitched roof", "a double-height living room with a mezzanine".
  2. Materials and palette: board-formed concrete, charred timber cladding, limewash plaster, terrazzo floor.
  3. Time and weather: golden hour, blue hour, overcast, snow, after rain.
  4. Camera and lens: eye-level, corner view, wide-angle, tilt-shift with straight verticals.
  5. Context and finish: landscape, people for scale, "architectural photography", then --ar and --raw.

--raw is useful here because it reduces Midjourney’s default artistic flourish, so buildings tend to look photographed rather than painted.

Materials, times of day and lenses

These three ingredients do most of the work in architectural imagery. Change one at a time to see its effect.

IngredientPrompt wordingEffect on the image
Materialboard-formed concrete, weathered corten steelHeavy, sculptural, textured surfaces
Materialpale oak, limewash plaster, linenSoft, warm, calm interiors
Time of daygolden hour, low warm sunLong shadows, glowing facades
Time of dayblue hour, warm interior lights glowingThe classic dusk shot, inside and outside both visible
Time of dayovercast diffused daylightEven light that shows true materials and colour
Lenswide-angle 24mm, corner of the roomShows the whole space, can feel spacious
Lenstilt-shift lens, straight vertical linesCorrects converging verticals on tall buildings
Lens50mm or 85mm detail shotClose studies of joints, textures and furniture

Lens names are cues rather than exact optics, but they push Midjourney towards the look of each focal length. The lens and depth of field guide explains the vocabulary in more detail, and lighting prompts covers the light itself.

Exterior prompts

  • a low single-storey house of board-formed concrete and glass set into a grassy hillside, golden hour, long shadows, wild meadow in the foreground, architectural photography, eye-level --ar 3:2 --raw
  • a black charred timber cabin beside a frozen lake, blue hour, warm light glowing from large windows, light snowfall, quiet Nordic landscape --ar 16:9 --raw
  • a slender residential tower with curved white balconies against a clear sky, tilt-shift lens, straight vertical lines, crisp midday light, contemporary architecture photograph --ar 2:3 --raw
  • a whitewashed Mediterranean courtyard house with arched openings and a central olive tree, hard afternoon sun, deep blue shadows, terracotta floor tiles --ar 4:5
  • aerial view of a timber-framed community library with a green roof in a small town square, overcast soft light, people walking for scale --ar 16:9 --raw

Interior prompts

  • a minimalist living room with limewash plaster walls, pale oak floor, low linen sofa and a single sculptural lamp, soft morning light through sheer curtains, wide-angle 24mm, interior design photography --ar 4:3 --raw
  • a compact galley kitchen with dark green cabinetry, brass fittings and a terrazzo worktop, warm evening lamplight, cosy and lived-in, eye-level view --ar 4:5 --raw
  • a double-height library with floor-to-ceiling walnut shelves, rolling ladder and a reading nook by a tall window, dust in shafts of afternoon sunlight --ar 2:3
  • a calm spa bathroom in honed travertine with a freestanding stone bath, skylight above, soft overcast light, steam, spare and serene --ar 4:5 --raw
  • a boutique hotel lobby with curved velvet seating, a burl wood reception desk and a mid-century pendant light, warm ambient lighting, wide-angle from the entrance --ar 16:9
  • close detail of a timber joinery corner where oak meets steel, raking side light revealing grain and texture, 85mm, shallow depth of field --ar 1:1 --raw

For a client presentation, generate the same room at different times of day by changing only the light phrase. It shows how the space feels across a day without changing anything else.

A few further habits help interiors in particular:

  • Name the furniture. "A low linen sofa and a round travertine side table" gives a cleaner room than "stylish furniture", which tends to fill the space with clutter.
  • Remove what you do not want. Add --no people, clutter for empty show-home shots, or ask for "a person reading in the corner" when you need scale and life.
  • Frame like a photographer. Interior photographers usually shoot from a corner or doorway at chest height with verticals kept straight. Saying so stops odd fisheye views.

What this is good for, and what it is not

Midjourney produces concept imagery: mood, atmosphere, material ideas and early visual direction. It does not produce construction drawings, accurate plans, buildable details or anything a contractor could work from.

Keep these limits in mind:

  • No real dimensions or scale. Rooms, stairs and doors may be impossible or out of proportion when you look closely.
  • Structure is not checked. Cantilevers, spans and junctions may look convincing and still make no engineering sense.
  • Plans and sections are decorative. Prompts for "floor plan" give graphic images, not usable drawings, and any labels or dimensions will be unreliable text.
  • Consistency is limited. The same building from a second angle will not match exactly. Use a style reference and a fixed material palette to keep a set coherent, and expect differences.

Use the images for moodboards, early client conversations, competition atmosphere sketches or interior styling ideas. Then develop the real design in your CAD or BIM tools, and label AI concept images clearly so nobody mistakes them for a proposal.

Doing this faster with Dreamdrive

Dreamdrive saves every prompt you run automatically, with its picture, model and settings, into the project you choose, so you can search your Library for it later, copy it with Copy prompt or drag the picture into another tool. Dreamdrive works inside midjourney.com in desktop Chrome.

Frequently asked questions

Can Midjourney create floor plans or construction drawings?
No. It can make images that look like plans, but dimensions, labels and structure are not reliable. Use it for concept imagery and develop real drawings in CAD or BIM software.
How do I stop buildings looking distorted in Midjourney?
Ask for a tilt-shift lens with straight vertical lines and an eye-level viewpoint, and add --raw for a more photographic result.
What is the best time of day for architecture prompts?
Blue hour with warm interior lights is the classic dusk shot, golden hour gives long shadows and glow, and overcast daylight shows materials and colour most honestly.
How do I show the same interior in different moods?
Keep the room description identical and change only the light phrase, for example morning light, overcast daylight and evening lamplight.
