Short answer

To make Midjourney images look cinematic, start with "film still", describe a moment with a hint of story, then name the shot size, lens texture, motivated lighting and colour grade, and finish with a widescreen aspect ratio such as --ar 239:100, often with --raw.

The cinematic prompt formula

"Cinematic" on its own is one of the most overused words in Midjourney prompts, and it mostly adds a vague moody gloss. A frame from a film looks the way it does because of specific choices: the shot size, the lens, the light, the colour grade and the shape of the frame. Name those and you get a still that feels like it belongs to a story.

  1. Moment: a subject doing something, mid-action, with a hint of narrative.
  2. Setting and time: place, era, time of day, weather.
  3. Shot and framing: wide establishing shot, medium close-up, over-the-shoulder, low angle.
  4. Lens and film texture: anamorphic, shallow depth of field, 35mm film grain, halation.
  5. Light and grade: motivated practical light, hard backlight, teal and orange, bleach bypass, desaturated.
  6. Parameters: a widescreen aspect ratio, often --raw.

Template: film still, [moment], [setting and time], [shot and framing], [lens and texture], [light and grade] --ar 239:100 --raw. Starting with "film still" tells Midjourney you want a frame, not a poster or a painting. For more on framing, see the guides to shot types and camera angles.

Describe looks, not people. Instead of naming a living director, describe what you admire in their frames: symmetrical pastel compositions, neon-soaked rain, long static wide shots, handheld grit. The description is more precise and keeps your prompt original.

Aspect ratios and colour grades

The aspect ratio does a lot of the cinematic work. Midjourney’s --ar takes whole numbers, so cinema formats are written as integer ratios.

FormatMidjourney parameterFeel
Anamorphic widescreen (2.39:1)--ar 239:100Epic, panoramic, big-screen drama
Flat widescreen (1.85:1)--ar 37:20Classic modern feature film
HD television (16:9)--ar 16:9Streaming series, documentary
Academy-style (about 1.37:1)--ar 4:3Vintage, intimate, art-house
Vertical (9:16)--ar 9:16Short-form video covers, phone screens

Colour grade words that Midjourney responds to reliably:

  • teal and orange: warm skin against cool shadows, the blockbuster look.
  • bleach bypass: desaturated, high contrast, silvery and harsh.
  • muted pastel grade: soft, whimsical, low contrast.
  • neon noir: deep blacks with magenta and cyan practical lights.
  • warm sepia, faded 1970s film: nostalgia, lifted blacks, soft grain.
  • black and white, high contrast: classic noir shadows and hard light.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Motivate the light. Mention where light comes from (a lamp, a window, a screen). Motivated light reads as cinema; random glow reads as illustration.
  • Imply a story. A character mid-action or looking at something off-screen feels like a frame from a longer sequence.
  • Use --raw for realism. It cuts Midjourney’s default gloss, which helps stills look photographed rather than painted.
  • Avoid poster language. Words like poster, title or key art invite text and collage layouts. Midjourney also struggles with long exact text, so add titles later.
  • Build a sequence. Reuse the same seed or a style reference to keep grade and texture consistent across several frames of the same "film".
  • Do not use real actors. Describe original characters by age, clothing and expression instead.

Frequently asked questions

What aspect ratio makes Midjourney images look cinematic?
Anamorphic widescreen at roughly 2.39:1, written as --ar 239:100, is the most cinematic. --ar 37:20 gives the 1.85:1 feature film shape, and --ar 16:9 suits a TV or streaming look.
Why does adding the word cinematic not work well?
On its own it is vague. Specific choices such as shot size, lens texture, light source and colour grade give Midjourney much clearer direction.
Can I name film directors in Midjourney prompts?
It is better to describe the look you want, such as symmetrical pastel compositions or neon-lit rain, than to name living directors. Descriptions are more precise and keep your work original.
How do I keep several cinematic images consistent?
Reuse the same colour grade wording, aspect ratio and a style reference with --sref, and optionally the same seed, across the whole sequence.
