Midjourney Wallpaper Prompts for Desktop and Phone Screens
For Midjourney wallpapers, set the screen ratio first (--ar 16:9 for most desktops, --ar 9:19 or --ar 9:20 for modern phones), then describe where the empty space should sit so icons and the clock stay readable. Upscale the result before using it.
A good wallpaper is mostly about shape, not subject. It needs the right aspect ratio for your screen, a calm area where icons or the clock will sit, and enough detail to look sharp without being busy. Set the ratio with --ar first, then write the prompt around where the empty space should go.
The Midjourney wallpaper prompt formula
Use this order: subject + composition and empty space + mood and light + style + parameters. The composition part is what most people skip, and it is what makes an image usable behind desktop icons or a lock screen clock.
Example: misty pine forest valley at dawn, wide panoramic view, large open sky in the upper half, soft golden light through fog, calm muted palette, detailed digital painting --ar 16:9 --s 250
Aspect ratios for desktop and phone
Midjourney’s --ar takes whole numbers, so pick the closest ratio and crop to your exact screen afterwards.
| Screen | Parameter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard desktop and laptop monitors | --ar 16:9 | The safest default for most displays |
| Many laptops and some monitors | --ar 16:10 | Slightly taller than 16:9 |
| Ultrawide monitors | --ar 21:9 | Favour panoramic scenes with a strong horizon |
| Dual monitors (spanning) | --ar 32:9 | Keep the subject away from the centre seam |
| Modern phones | --ar 9:19 or --ar 9:20 | Close to most current handsets; crop to fit |
| Older phones | --ar 9:16 | Also suits vertical video covers |
| Tablets | --ar 3:4 or --ar 4:3 | Choose by the orientation you use most |

The --tile prompts create a square that repeats seamlessly, which is handy for screens of any size. Set the image as a tiled background rather than stretching it.
Getting a sharp, usable result
- Upscale your favourite. Use Upscale on the chosen image to get more pixels before setting it as a wallpaper. For very large or high-density screens you may still want to resize carefully in an image editor.
- Plan for icons and the clock. Phrases like "open sky in the upper half" or "subject in the lower third" leave room for a lock screen clock or desktop icons.
- Avoid tiny busy detail. Dense patterns behind icons make them hard to read. Lower
--stylizeoften gives calmer results. - Dark screens. For OLED phones and dark mode, ask for "near-black background" or "deep shadows" so the image does not glow at night.
- Keep a matched pair. Reuse the same prompt and
--seed, changing only--ar, to make desktop and phone versions that feel related. They will not be identical, but they stay close.
Common mistakes
- Generating square, then cropping. A 1:1 image cropped to 16:9 loses most of the scene. Set the final ratio in the prompt.
- Centring a subject on a dual-monitor wallpaper. The bezel cuts it in half. Put interest on each side instead.
- Asking for text. Quotes and words tend to come out garbled. Add
--no textand set any lettering in an editor. - Using real logos or characters. Stick to original scenes; trademarked characters and logos are not yours to use.
