Midjourney Poster Design Prompts: Formula and 22 Examples
For Midjourney posters, describe one bold central image, a graphic style or era, a tight colour palette and where the empty space for text should go, then add a portrait aspect ratio such as --ar 2:3 and --no text. Midjourney cannot reliably render long exact text, so add the title and details yourself in a design tool.
The poster prompt formula
A poster has a job: one strong image, a clear hierarchy and room for words. Midjourney is good at the image and the composition. It is not good at long, exact text. So the reliable approach is to generate the artwork with deliberate empty space, then set the title, dates and details yourself in a design tool.
Formula: [poster type] poster, [central image], [graphic style or era], [colour palette], [composition with empty space for text], [texture or print finish] --ar [ratio] --no text
| Slot | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Poster type | Event, film, travel, gig, exhibition, minimalist | vintage travel poster |
| Central image | One bold subject | a lighthouse on a cliff above a turquoise bay |
| Style or era | A movement or print technique | 1930s art deco, flat colour lithograph |
| Palette | 3-5 named colours | teal, coral, cream and navy |
| Space for type | Where the empty area sits | large empty sky in the top third for a headline |
| Finish | Paper and print texture | subtle paper grain, slight ink misregistration |
Use a portrait aspect ratio that matches real print sizes. --ar 2:3 fits standard poster frames, and the A-series paper sizes are close to --ar 5:7. See aspect ratios for more.
What Midjourney can and cannot do with text
- Short words sometimes work. In recent versions, a single short word in quotation marks can render correctly, but expect to regenerate a few times and check every letter.
- Long text fails. Dates, venue names, credits and taglines will usually come out garbled or misspelled.
- Fake text appears uninvited. Poster prompts often trigger random lettering. Add
--no text, letters, wordsto keep the space clean. - Typography is better done by you. Real fonts give you sharp edges, correct spelling and control over hierarchy, which matter when the poster is printed.
So write prompts that ask for space: "empty top third", "plain band across the bottom", "subject on the left with clear space on the right". This is the single biggest improvement for poster work.

Tips and common mistakes
- Asking Midjourney to set your copy. Generate the art, then add title, dates and details in a design tool. You get correct spelling and print-sharp type.
- No room for text. If the image fills every corner, there is nowhere to put the headline. Say where the empty space goes.
- Too many colours. Limit the palette to 3-5 named colours. Posters read from a distance, and a tight palette reads better.
- Ignoring print size. Pick the aspect ratio for the frame first, and upscale the final image. Check your printer’s resolution requirements before ordering large prints.
- Copying real posters or franchises. Describe eras and techniques (art deco, screen print, risograph, Swiss style), not specific films, brands or artists. For consistent series looks, use a style reference.
